Medford Vocational Technical High School

Serving Boston, Cambridge, Medford, Somerville & Waltham Public Schools

The Medford Public Schools is a member district of the Shore Educational Collaborative’s Shore Occupational Learning and Vocational Educational Division (SOLVED). SOLVED provides access to exploratory experiences for students in member districts so that students may explore the particular program in which they have an expressed interest along with additional areas. Medford Vocational Technical High School (MVTHS) provides exploratory experiences to SOLVED member school district students provided that they are enrolled in a SOLVED member school district for this purpose. Likewise, SOLVED member school districts provide these experiences for MVTHS students enrolled. After the exploratory program, SOLVED member school district students are eligible to apply for admission to schools of member districts in those instances where the student’s home school district does not offer the particular vocational-technical program that is of interest to the student.

Students must meet the admission criteria for the school and then the program placement criteria of the member district where the program the student is seeking to enter is located. SOLVED member school district students will be evaluated and ranked using the criteria set forth in the Admissions Policy. Ninth grade students from collaborative districts may elect to explore specific vocational areas that are not offered within their District and participate in the freshman vocational selection process at the MVTHS. Such students will be evaluated in the exploratory according to the established grading rubric. If SOLVED member school district students are selected for a vocational placement, slots will be held for those students and they will be given the opportunity to transfer to the collaborative school district for enrollment as tenth graders. All collaborative students will have to meet the basic requirements of promotion to the grade they seek and passing grades in English language arts or the equivalent and mathematics. Collaborative students may be denied admission if their discipline records contain infractions involving weapons, drugs, assault on school staff or school threats. Sending school district will be responsible for transportation for exploratory and freshmen students.

SOLVED member school district students are not eligible for first time admission as eleventh or twelfth grade students unless they are transferring from another vocational-technical program, and they must follow the transfer procedures set forth below.

Programs not offered at MVTHS but offered through the SOLVED Collaboration include:

September 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to our new families and welcome back to existing! We have been busy getting the school ready for a new year. This includes new staff members in Carpentry, Business Technology & Marketing, Student Support Services, Adjustment Counselor, and Cooperative Education Coordinator. It is an exciting time for MVTHS and we are excited to begin the year and educate your son/daughter. The following are some changes that we would like you to pay particular attention to:

  • Visitor Information and Tardy System. Visitors will be asked to present a valid i.d. which will be run through a database. This is to ensure your child’s safety during school hours. This system will also give your child real time tardy slips to be presented which will ease concerns of students not being marked accordingly.
  • Common Strand Electives. These electives will be offered to grade 11 & 12 students during their academic week. These electives are related to the CTE program area your son/daughter is enrolled in. Courses include Blueprint reading/CAD, Entrepreneurship, EKG, Computer Programming.
  • Inclusion. It has been documented through research where classes are inclusive, all students benefit. We have increased the number of inclusionary classes through the co-teaching model. We believe this model has shown great success across the country.
  • Honors and A/P courses. MVTHS will be partnering with MHS to offer advanced courses to students. There are requirements to be able to enroll in such courses. Please contact the guidance office for eligibility.
  • Foreign Language. Grade 9 & 10 students have the opportunity to enroll in foreign language and are encouraged to do so if they plan to pursue higher education.
  • Computer Programming. Students in grade 11 & 12 are able to enroll in a Computer Programming elective course at MVTHS. This is taught in conjunction with a grant from the TEALS organization (part of Microsoft). Students are taught by software engineers and recent MIT graduates.
  • Evening School for graduates. Many programs offered at MVTHS have licenses attached. To meet the needs of these students, MVTHS is offering evening school programs. All students in these types of programs should enter upon graduation and continue their education in the chosen field.
  • Articulated Credits. Students in many of our CTE programs can earn college credit at community colleges across the state by simply doing well in their CTE areas (B+ or better). This provides a significant cost savings to our students.
  • Program Advisory Committee. All programs are looking for parents to serve on our advisory boards. This is a requirement for the Department of Education and it helps us improve our programs. If you are interested or can recommend potential members from industry, please consider this opportunity. Meetings are twice per year.
  • Freshman Orientation/New Student Orientation. If your child is entering grade 9 or is transferring into MVTHS from another school/district, please plan to attend orientation on August 27th from 8am-11am. All students will meet in the front of the building for a group photo.
  • Math and Reading. If your child hasn’t completed the math or summer reading, all information was posted online and given to students prior to the close of school. If you are new to the district, please see the website for information.

When students enter the building, they will see other changes including paint, trim, and equipment, to name a few. MVTHS had teachers and students working throughout the summer to ensure the best possible start to the year. We encourage you to talk with your child about basic levels of behavior and performance expectations. Each day is a new opportunity to be great and learn new skills that will go beyond high school and into life. We will see you all on September 2nd!

Sincerely,

Heidi T. Riccio, Principal/Director
Medford Vocational Technical High School
