Mayor McGlynn’s Final MHS/MVTHS Graduation Remarks

Mayor McGlynn

Superintendent Belson, Headmaster Dr. Perella, Vocational Director Riccion, fellow School Committee members, faculty, family members and the class of 2015. It is with great pleasure that I bring to you the congratulations and best wishes of all the citizens of Medford upon the occasion of your high school graduation!

As a class, you have accomplished much…attaining GBL titles, all-star recognition, awards in music, art, ethics and language. Having not one, but two scholar athletes recognized for their overall achievements both in the classroom and in athletics: Andrew Cronin, the Boston Briuns Sportsmanship Award and Adrienne Porrazzo, The Boston Globe scholar-athlete.

Jose Lopes placed 6th in the state in the high jump.

Hunter Raymond, a student at the Medford Vocational Technical High School, developed the Richbot 3000, which enabled his teacher, Richard Cormio, who was recovering from illness, to continue to teach from home.

Rezwan Ali was named the winner of the WCVB “High Five” scholarship, Rezwan, from Bangladesh, arrived at Medford High School speaking little English. In less than a year, he was taking AP and honors courses, and working multiple part-time jobs to help with family bills. His dedication to excellence was rewarded by Channel 5.

Truly, the class of 2015 has so much to be proud of!

Together, we lived a lesson in how government works, in order to make major improvements to enhance your high school experience. The class of 2015 and their families lobbied their elected officials to generate $13 million, $8 million of which was a state grant, to reconstruct the 17 science labs at MHS. It was a remarkable transformation with great benefits for all our students.

Your efforts led to the elimination of the imaginary barrier between the high school and the vocational school, and instead offered shared and improved opportunities for all students.

This class demonstrated the leadership necessary to stand before their elected officials to urge passage of a $2.5 million appropriation to rehabilitate the high school pool for recreational and high school sporting events.

And, the class of 2015 worked tirelessly for the reconstruction of Hormel Stadium, including a new rubberized track and turf field. These improvements were just a part of what enabled Medford High School to achieve the highest NEASC accreditation and be named a Level 1 school…the best rating a high school can attain from the Massachusetts Department of Education.

Medford High provided you with a solid foundation for college, the work force or military service. Working together…plan, lobby and educate, you can accomplish great things. Set goals for yourself, use mistakes as learning tools and never give up on your dreams.

I feel a particular bond with the class of 2015, as I too will be moving on, graduating in a sense from the Mayor’s office. I have learned that once you find your passion and build a team around you, you can achieve anything. Think about it. That is how you accomplished your goals. With your team…your parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, and classmates. They were there to guide you and together you achieved.

I believe Vice President Joseph Biden said it best this year, at Yale University’s Graduation, “It all gets down to being personal. It’s the stuff that fosters relationships. It is the only way to breed trust in everything you do in life. It matters.”

I speak from experience, relationships are what can take you far in life. Family, friends, teachers, coaches, neighbors and mentors…Nurture those relationships, as they will forever pay dividends in your life.

Be proud that you are a Mustang and that you hail from a city that flourishes with diversity! Over 65 different countries are represented within our school system. Set your standards high, work hard and you will be a success.

In my first graduation in 1988, I quoted Dr. Seuss, and it still rings true today, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the person who will decide where to go.”

May the future bring you much success and happiness. Congratulations and may God bless the United States of America!

Medford Vocational Technical High School

Serving Boston, Cambridge, Medford, Somerville & Waltham Public Schools

The Medford Public Schools is a member district of the Shore Educational Collaborative’s Shore Occupational Learning and Vocational Educational Division (SOLVED). SOLVED provides access to exploratory experiences for students in member districts so that students may explore the particular program in which they have an expressed interest along with additional areas. Medford Vocational Technical High School (MVTHS) provides exploratory experiences to SOLVED member school district students provided that they are enrolled in a SOLVED member school district for this purpose. Likewise, SOLVED member school districts provide these experiences for MVTHS students enrolled. After the exploratory program, SOLVED member school district students are eligible to apply for admission to schools of member districts in those instances where the student’s home school district does not offer the particular vocational-technical program that is of interest to the student.

Students must meet the admission criteria for the school and then the program placement criteria of the member district where the program the student is seeking to enter is located. SOLVED member school district students will be evaluated and ranked using the criteria set forth in the Admissions Policy. Ninth grade students from collaborative districts may elect to explore specific vocational areas that are not offered within their District and participate in the freshman vocational selection process at the MVTHS. Such students will be evaluated in the exploratory according to the established grading rubric. If SOLVED member school district students are selected for a vocational placement, slots will be held for those students and they will be given the opportunity to transfer to the collaborative school district for enrollment as tenth graders. All collaborative students will have to meet the basic requirements of promotion to the grade they seek and passing grades in English language arts or the equivalent and mathematics. Collaborative students may be denied admission if their discipline records contain infractions involving weapons, drugs, assault on school staff or school threats. Sending school district will be responsible for transportation for exploratory and freshmen students.

SOLVED member school district students are not eligible for first time admission as eleventh or twelfth grade students unless they are transferring from another vocational-technical program, and they must follow the transfer procedures set forth below.

Programs not offered at MVTHS but offered through the SOLVED Collaboration include:

$5,000 will provide funding for new tools for the Carpentry and Laborer’s program

The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education® grant to Medford Vocational Technical High School in Medford for new tools that will support the Construction and Craft Laborer’s and Carpentry expansion program. Medford Vocational Technical High School is one of 545 schools across the United States to be awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant this spring for improvement projects.

The tools will be used to expand both of these technical programs and give students the ability to complete renovations of the Health Assisting program. The Health Assisting program is expanding into new space and students in these programs will assist in the renovation of the space using the new tools awarded.

“The Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program delivers on Lowe’s commitment to improve the educational environment for students across the country,” said Maureen Ausura, chairwoman of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “We’re honored to work with Medford Vocational Technical High School to support the needs of our local students, teachers and families.”

Since its inception in 2006, Lowe’s Toolbox for Education has provided nearly $45 million in grants to more than 10,000 schools, benefiting more than 6 million schoolchildren. Grants are available to K-12 public schools in the United States for a wide range of improvement projects. Schools may be eligible to receive Toolbox grants up to $100,000. Parent groups and educators can apply by visiting ToolboxForEducation.com. The fall cycle will open Aug. 3, 2015.

Since 1957, the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has helped improve communities across North America through financial contributions and support for employee volunteerism.
